Discovering Colombia for Myself

On this project, my objective was to curate a publication that covers the process of learning about Colombian culture with a comparison to my personal experiences using narrative and imagery.

Initial Process

Throughout the book, there are handwritten sections about my experiences with the culture or how it has influenced my life. During the research process, if I remembered something from my life that related I wrote it down. For example when I came across emeralds and realized how important they were to Colombian culture, the earrings my grandmother gave me when I was a baby made a lot more sense. I made all the textures and marks myself. Traditional Colombian textiles inspired me to add this detail of pattern throughout the book.

I curated articles to focus on geography and people, the drug war and it’s effect on the world, then finishing up with stereotypical Colombian culture. I also included newspaper articles in Spanish, as well as referencing textile patterns. Throughout the book, there are handwritten sections about my responses to the research and the influence on my life. I thought collage would be best for imagery because I wanted the book to be about the process of learning not just the information itself.

God made Colombia so beautiful, so rich in natural resources and so spectacular in every way that it was unfair to the rest of the world. So, God evened the score. He populated Colombia with the most evil race of men.
I decided to put the mentioned quote on the back because I thought was the most beautiful quote I came across while researching and just summed up Colombia. The saying is allegedly popular in Colombia.
